SENTINEL / PROGRAM PLUS (MILBEMYCIN OXIME and LUFENURON)
The most effective heartworm medication is Sentinel (called Program Plus in some countries). Sentinel contains Milbemycin oxime and Lufenuron. Milbemycin oxime is used in the prevention of heartworm disease and in the control of hookworm, roundworm and whipworm. When combined with Lufenuron it is also used to control fleas by preventing the development of flea eggs. The medication does not kill adult fleas.
Milbemycin oxime with Lufenuron is indicated for use in dogs and puppies four weeks of age and older, and two pounds body weight or greater. The usual dose of milbemycin oxime with Lufenuron for dogs 2-10 pounds is 2.3mg/46mg, 11-25 pounds is 5.75mg/115mg, 26-50 pounds is 11.5mg/230mg and 51-100 pounds is 23mg/460mg given once a month year round. An alternate treatment is to give this medication once a month during the mosquito season and also one month after the season ends. The pet should be tested for heartworm disease before starting this medication if the pet has been off a heartworm preventative for 6 months or more.
